9/11 and The Global Novel

Reading 9/11— the destruction of the World Trade towers in New York and the subsequent 'war on terror', through its representation in novels from South Asia, Middle East and their diaspora. Alternate genealogies of 9/11 within the larger history of the global cold war. Close attention to the novel form alongside debates in novel theory and world literature. Comparing representations of 9/11 in novels from South Asia with those in the Western media to ask questions grounded in political and critical theory. No language requirements. Class discussions/reading responses, mid-term presentation, and final paper developed over the semester.
