After completing majors in History and English at Duke, I did a Ph.D. in History at Princeton University. I subsequently taught at Princeton, St. Vincent College, the University of Alabama, Auckland University (New Zealand), and the University of Illinois before coming to Montana.
I learned to read critically and carefully. My English major helped me learn to deal with primary sources. In addition to polishing my skills in critical reading and thinking, a series of wonderful teachers helped me polish my writing. That set of skills became the way I earn my living.
