How has your English degree from Duke shaped your work life?

My background in language, literature, and writing has directly led to my success in leadership and management. The discipline required to read and critically analyze texts, coupled with the consideration of the human condition that comes along with the pleasure of reading, are indispensable parts of my everyday professional life, inside AND outside of the classroom. I have developed research skills that have opened up opportunities in areas outside of the academy, like non-profit work and consulting. My experience as an English major has also refined my ability to express myself in a variety of spaces, be it through speech or written word, in ways that allow me to do what I love (teach) while also dabbling in professional projects that require use of the transferable skills I have acquired through the discipline.
