2016
After graduating with an English degree from Duke, I attended Northwestern University School of Law and am currently working in the complex commercial litigation department at a law firm in Silicon Valley, CA.
While reading Chaucer or Milton may not strike people as the most practical way to prepare for a career, the close reading skills I developed as an English major at Duke have become invaluable to me as an attorney who spends his days reading for detail. Studying English also helped cultivate in me a writer's touch when drafting briefs and memoranda. The legal field is rife with dense, convoluted material–the ability to produce truly good writing is rarer than one might think. I am grateful to the English department for providing me with a strong foundation in the written word and thereby helping me to discover my voice.
