A number of English majors are interning this summer at a number of different business and organizations and in a variety of roles.
Some are interning in publishing/editorial roles:
Michael Gulcicek, Class of 2019 major, is interning through the Duke in New York Program as Junior Editor for True.Ink. an online magazine. Class of 2018’s Manda Hufstedler is interning as Editorial/Acquisitions intern at Duke University Press.
Others have taken up internships in politics:
Katherine Haley, Class of 2019 is interning for Senator John Cornyn’s office. Senator Cornyn is the senior US senator for Texas. Madison Laton, Class of 2019, is interning for the Center for Free Markets and Government Regulation in conjunction with the Heritage Foundation.
Some English Majors have even found tech internships for the summer:
Hannah Kelly, Class of 2018, will be interning as a web and application software engineer for Brava Home out in Silicon Valley. Brava Home is a domestic automation company that integrates technology and design to elevate and simplify the kitchen experience.
There are also majors interning in education and youth outreach this summer:
Class of 2019 English Major, Brandon Sweeney will spend part of the summer as a 6th Grade English teacher for Student U in Durham, NC. The mission of Student U is to empower students in the Durham Public Schools to own their education by developing the academic skills and personal well-being necessary to succeed in college and beyond.
Lauren Bunce, Class of 2018, will serve as Senior Intern/Digital Storytelling Project Leader for Partnership for Appalachian Girls’ Education (PAGE). PAGE seeks to insure and empower underserved rural girls through education; the organization serves girls in Madison County, NC, in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
