To conclude the Spring ’24 semester, Professors Mesha Maren and Toby Martinez de las Rivas hosted a creative writing reading entitled “A Garden of Literary Delight” in Duke Gardens. They invited undergraduate students to read some of their creative writing pieces, written for a class or as part of their passion for writing.
Many of Prof. Martinez’s students attended and shared poetry they wrote for his “Intro to Poetry” class. Most read at least one Haiku they wrote, and some shared other poetry originally written for the class, but has now been reworked. Several students read their “riddle poems” and really had the crowd engaged as the audience was tasked with trying to solve the riddle.
Prof. Maren’s ‘Intro to Creative Writing’ students read excerpts from their works. One student’s teaser from a novel he is writing captivated the audience, and everyone was eager for hints about the whole story.
This event allowed undergraduate creative writers to share with their peers and commune with the Duke Creative Writing community in an environment where all attendees felt comfortable sharing their work in front of an audience.
Duke Gardens, with its beauty and sounds of nature on a lovely sunny Spring day, complimented the students' excellent creative writing.
