Kenyan author and journalist Peter Kimani will be reading from his latest work of fiction this Friday, February 11, 2022.  The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Ruby Lounge in the Rubenstein Arts Center.

Kimani is Duke English's spring 2022 Artist in Residence.  He is teaching two courses on writing fiction, an introduction and an advanced class.  His most recent novel Dance of the Jakaranda was named a New York Times "Notable Book of the Year," won the Hurston/Wright Legacy Award, and was nominated for the Big Book Award 2018. He was one of only three international poets commissioned by National Public Radio to compose and recite a poem to mark Barack Obama's inauguration in January 2009. His children’s novel Upside Down received Kenya’s highest literary honor, the Jomo Kenyatta Prize for Literature, in 2011. Kimani is also an award-winning journalist, rising to senior editor at The Standard. His work has appeared in The Guardian, The New AfricanSky News, and the Daily Nation

In 2019, Kimani chaired the judging panel of the Caine Prize for African Writing, the continent’s preeminent literary award and mentorship program. This year, he is serving on the judging panel of the Wright/Hurston Legacy Awards, which honor black writers in the US and the diaspora.
