Maryscot Mullins, Assistant to the Director of Graduate Studies, Duke English
The English Department at Duke University is honored to announce that Claire Ravenscroft and Chandler Fry have been selected as co-winners of the 2019 Stephen Horne Award for Excellence in Teaching.
This award is presented annually to a graduate student instructor in the English Department who best demonstrates outstanding commitment and excellence in the classroom. Instructors are nominated by their students, and the winner is selected based on the number of students who nominate a graduate instructor; the nature of the descriptions that accompany those nominations; and student evaluation forms from the instructor’s course.
Claire Ravenscroft was nominated for the award by seven students in her fall 2018 English 386.01 course, "Science Fiction Film." This impressive number of nominations, combined with her excellent teaching evaluations and student comments resulted in her winning this honor. Chandler Fry was nominated by two students in his spring 2019 English 90S class, “Law, Ethics, and Power.” His overall instructorship rating (a stellar 5.0 out of five), the nominations, and student comments submitted during the teaching evaluation process led to him winning this award.
As winners of 2019 Stephen Horne Award for Excellence in Teaching, each will each receive a monetary award and certificate. Their names will be added to the Stephen Horne Award for Excellence in Teaching plaque located in English Department’s Graduate Student Lounge, 328 Allen Building, and the Stephen Horne Award for Excellence in Teaching page on the English Department’s website.
