2020
I support four adults with disabilities with their daily life activities, and we live in intentional community together in a home in Arlington, VA.
In my role as an assistant, much of what I'm doing each day is paying careful attention to the people I support--noticing needs, patterns, and nonverbal and verbal communication. In many ways, I think the English degree prepared me well for this kind of active listening / "close reading" of other people. I'm able to hold the complexity, contradictions, and nuances that come with my work with so much more tenderness, confidence, and understanding because of my English degree.
