Professional Background

Faculty member of the Department of Religious Studies, Southern Methodist University, 1958-1998; Professor emeritus, 1998-present.

How has being an English graduate from Duke University helped shape your professional success?

I have had numerous occasions to publish articles and books. dealing with New Testament and early Christian studies. My English major at Duke gave me a deep appreciation for the use and power of language. One of my books gave me the opportunity to employ narrative criticism in the study of Luke and Acts in the New Testament. Perhaps more deeply my English major provided me a basis for the appreciation of literary masterpieces, which have been formative in both my professional and non-professional life.
