Professional Background

I spent my life as a writer and did a variety of jobs on the side to make money. I sometimes taught creative writing (at Duke and UNC) and sometimes worked in the Duke Libarary systerm. For the last thirteeen years of employment I taught in the Sanford School of Public Policy, teaching grad students to write policy memos.

How has your English degree from Duke shaped your work life?

I became a novelist. I majored in English because I wanted to know the tradition. I also taught English and writing all my life.
