How has being an English graduate from Duke University help shape your professional success?

I always knew I wanted to be a writer; studying English gave me the tools, the knowledge, and the frame of cultural reference both to research and to write. Having studied both creative writing and critical/academic writing, I've had the great fortune to be able to pursue careers in both fields, now with multiple books (poetry, nonfiction, edited anthologies, etc) under my belt. I'm doing exactly what I always wanted to do, and all thanks to the great start and the world-class training I received at Duke!
