Professional Background

I have purposely veered off of the professional fasttrack so that I can have the flexibility to pursue a variety of options that give me personal and professional satisfaction and allow me to have some balance in my life. I have worked was a middle school teacher with Langley School in McLean, VA, and Baldwin School outside of Philadelphia. I have worked as a puppeteer and educator with Kids on the Block, Inc. and have worked with young people and theater with YPT, Ann Arbor, and Fury Theatre, Chicago, among others. I have done a lot of substitute teaching, tutoring, and waiting tables, among other jobs. I am currently teaching as an adjunct at City Colleges of Chicago.

How has being an English graduate from Duke University help shape your professional success?

While I have rebelled against the need for professional achievement that Duke has seemed to me to promote, I have remained aware that my degree from Duke has given my both a key and a safety net as I explore. Also, I recognize the influence of my freshman English instructor in the way I comment on my students' papers!
