Graduate Study in English

A student considering graduate study in British or American literature should have some sense of the academic career that might lie ahead. Do you think of yourself primarily as a teacher or a scholar? Do you want to teach in a high school or a college or university? Do you want a career of high visibility or would you prefer teaching without the pressure of a demanding publishing schedule?

Whether you think of yourself as a strongly competent, excellent, or brilliant student will also help determine the programs to which you apply. It is of very considerable value to visit the schools that interest you, talk with the departments' directors of graduate studies, and visit classes and meet other graduate students.

The pamphlet "Preparing for Graduate Study" is available from the Trinity College Office of Undergraduate Research and Advising for Pre-Graduate Study, located in 04 Allen Building. Advertisements and brochures for graduate programs in English are retained in the Career Development Center in Page Building.

Advice about graduate study is available also from the English Department's Committee on Pre-graduate School Advising. Please contact the Director of Undergraduate Studies in English. Email Carol Renegar to arrange an appointment -- crenegar@duke.edu.
