THE NOVEL, LIVE!

ENGLISH 277

A course in the truly contemporary Anglophone novel, designed as a Signature Course for students across all majors and classes who want to ask the big questions about life and the ways we aspire to live it most fully, intensely, and in its highest forms. The course is team-taught in an interactive update of the Socratic method. Likely authors include Toni Morrison, Cormac McCarthy, J.M. Coetzee, Kazuo Ishiguro and lesser known, but no less magisterial, visionaries. In addition to Nobel Prize, Man-Booker, and National Book Award winning novelists, students will encounter an example of the newest 21st-century novel-form: an epic TV series such Deadwood, The Sopranos, or The Wire.
