Professional Background

So many volunteer experiences, each exciting and an amazing time. After my husband died from lung cancer, I knew that I could depend on my education at Duke to give me the skills necessary to succeed. I was fortunate to become the Executive Director of the United Way of America for a medium-sized city in Minnesota.

How has being an English graduate from Duke University helped shape your professional success?

Although my work experience was challenging, I felt comfident in my writing and speaking skills. But this is probably not the place to say this, but as a student of Dr. Katherine Gilbert, I learned kindness, understanding and terrific knowledge from my classes with Dr.Katherine Gilbert in morals, philosophy, etc. She was my guiding light! and I was thrilled that I could be her student. Thank you Duke University for making this possible.
