Professional Background

As a captain in the US Army, I studied English full time at Duke for two years. After receiving my masters degree, I joined the faculty of the Department of English at the US Military Academy at West Point. For three years. I taught English Composition, Advanced Composition,and Literature core courses. I also taught an elective on Modern American Literature. Years later as a lieutenant colonel, I headed a Communication Skills Office for four years. My staff and I taught Business Writing and Presentatioin Skills to Army officers and noncommissioned officers. In the past 23 years since retiring from the Army, I have taught Business Writing, Public Speaking, Emotional Intelligence, and Leadership Skills to people within companies across the United States. I have authored nine workshops on behalf of the American Management Association.

How has being an English graduate from Duke University helped shape your professional success?

My Duke experience has been crucial to my career. My professors inspired me and helped sharpen my critical thinking skills. They deepened my understanding of literature and modeled the many ways for me to teach and inspire others.
