How has being an English graduate from Duke University helped shape your professional success?

I have always loved writing and music, and now that I am the Director of Music Ministries for a large parish outside Philadelphia (2500 families), I use my promotional and persuasive writing skills every day. The ability to communicate clearly is an asset in any field, and my ministry to people who have lost a loved one or are getting married requires a sensitivity and tact that comes from a good command of the English language. I also edit the scripts for shows that my band performs around town, and in my role on the Board at Settlement Music School, I help write their promortional material. I consider myself to be a curious person who has many interests (I read Harper's and Scientific American every month) and I still read novels and poetry and credit my undergraduate study for my ability to read all kinds of literature and nonfiction. It has opened my mind to perceptions and aspirations across the boundaries of time and place, and I am grateful for it.
