How has being an English graduate from Duke University help shape your professional success?

Being a doctor, you have to be in touch with the tragedies and successes of humanity. I see people in the worst tragedies and some of the most stressful situations of their lives. My English major at Duke had me delve into the human experience from literature/novels/poetry from all over the world and from different time periods. It helped me to learn to communicate, in writing and in speech, and to empathize with those from all walks of life. In this respect, it paved the way for me to be a more compassionate physician and meet the needs of my patients and their families.
