I entered the journalism field immediately after graduation as a staff writer for the Durham Morning Herald. The wife of a Duke professor recommended me for the job and the Herald was interested in beginning to hire more women.
I honed my writing skills as an English major with weekly essays in freshman year and many papers through four years. I think there has been a certain prestige involved in having a Duke graduate on the staff of newspapers.
